The Cedarville University speech team placed fifth in the speech portion of the Steve Hunt Classic, a virtual competition hosted October 8 by Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. The Steve Hunt Classic featured more than 40 colleges and universities from 23 states. This is Cedarville's largest preseason tournament. Ave Burson won first place for novice prose interpretation and novice informative speaking, and fifth place for novice impromptu speaking.

Members of the Cedarville speech team include Olivia Ball from Columbus, Ohio; Alex Boesch from Champaign, Illinois; Ave Burson from Cedarville, Ohio; Will Galkin from Murray, Utah; Maren Moses from Columbus, Ohio; Paul Miller from Chariton, Iowa; and Micaiah O'Malley from Martinsville, Indiana.

Students pursuing a degree in allied health can often be found in medical practices, training centers and on the sidelines at football games. But one Saturday a month, students from Cedarville University's Allied Health Student Organization (AHSO) will be serving their community on the frontlines of the battle against food scarcity. Starting on Saturday, Nov. 20, students from AHSO served food from 10-11 a.m. at the Cedarville Community Food Pantry. The pantry, hosted by Cedarville United Presbyterian Church, provides food for local residents on the third Saturday of every month. AHSO first connected with the food pantry last year, thanks to a connection between AHSO's then-treasurer, Emma Mlagan, and representatives from the food pantry. Students were able to serve once at the end of the spring semester, greeting those who arrived and helping with distributing food.

It started with some longtime local residents and a simple vision: beautify the village of Cedarville. Since March 2021, members of the Cedarville Revitalization Project have painted curbs, finished building-side stonework, cut brush and pulled weeds and even commissioned a mural. Now, Cedarville committee members are turning to senior industrial and innovative design (IID) majors from Cedarville University for their fresh, innovative design proposals to further revitalize the village.

Arielle Wenig may be Cedarville University's most proactive student ever. Wenig, a senior social work major from Marion, Ohio, wrote a letter to Cedarville when she was in fourth grade for a class project. Her teacher asked the class to reach out to colleges and universities as a part of a writing activity, and Wenig found Cedarville after a simple Google search of "Christian colleges in Ohio." When Cedarville's admissions team wrote Wenig back, they had no idea that the then 10-year-old would one day step foot on campus for her 1,000 days.

After nearly six months of work, Joshua Johnson and his student team's business is finally taking flight. Johnson, a junior management major from Mansfield, Ohio, is leading a team of students working on a line of products aimed at preventing military suicides. Their new business, Consider the Ravens, has just launched as part of the Neos company, a branch of Cedarville University's Integrated Business Core (IBC) program.

In preschool, Marissa Conrad won awards for best handwriting in her class, which is more remarkable than you think since she no hands. Now a sophomore majoring in at Cedarville University, Conrad has continued to push herself in every area of life. Despite her disability, Conrad has enjoyed learning football, playing the cello, shooting airsoft and rowing boats. Conrad, from Buffalo, New York, explained that going through life without hands has not been the only challenge. In middle school, she waded through her parents' divorce, her mom's diagnosis of cancer and a transition to a different high school. During these years of external crisis, Conrad struggled internally with why God would choose to create her differently.

Two student organizations in the Cedarville University School of Pharmacy were recognized for their achievements at their respective national meetings. Cedarville's chapter of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International (CPFI) received the Student Chapter of the Year Award at CPFI's 2021 National Conference. This came a year after Dr. Jeff Bates, the preceptor of Cedarville's CPFI chapter and dean of the school of pharmacy, received the Preceptor of the Year Award. Corri Adams of Akron, Ohio, president of Cedarville's CPFI chapter, said the awards encouraged her and the chapter, which is focused on building up the faith of pharmacy students and helping them integrate their faith and practice. Meanwhile, Cedarville's chapter of the Student National Pharmacy Association (SNPhA), which serves underserved populations, received a series of awards in July at the 2021 SNPhA National Convention. Zach Krauss of Temple, Texas, who is president this year, and Chrissy Capo of Galloway, New Jersey, who was president last year, won numerous awards.

Americans have plenty of options to kill bacteria and repel mosquitoes, two sources of disease. In many developing nations, those resources aren't readily available. But a tropical fruit not very well known to Americans, but available in many places around the world, might provide a solution. A team of researchers from Cedarville University is looking into the potential bacteria-killing, insect-repelling properties of soapberry extract. Various species of soapberry plants can be found throughout eastern and southern Asia, the Pacific islands and the Americas, including the southeastern U.S., Texas and Hawaii.

When McKenzie Barlow began working on her senior design project, some people thought she was "udderly"ridiculous, but others were "mooved" with interest. Barlow, a senior electrical engineering major from Fork, Maryland, is currently working with her group on a senior engineering project - a Chick-fil-A retrieving cow robot! Barlow is partnering with senior electrical engineering major Joshua Blackburn from Mount Gilead, Ohio, and senior computer engineering majors Joshua Mundell from North Ridgeville, Ohio, and Andrew Murphy from lower Burrell, Pennsylvania.

Students from the Cedarville University School of Engineering and Computer Science have designed automobiles, planes and boats for competitions. At the 2022 NASA Student Launch in April 2022, they will add rockets to the list. Chad Sanderson of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, a senior mechanical engineering student, first learned of the NASA competition last year. He was looking for ideas for his senior design project, required for senior engineering students, when a high school friend who is attending Carnegie Mellon University told him that his university was competing. Sanderson recruited classmates at Cedarville to join him in the competition, and they began researching the NASA competition and rocket building. In addition to Sanderson, who is leading the team and designing the motor mount, Cedarville's team also consists of seniors Jacob Titus of Medford, New Jersey, who is leading work on the aerobrake system; Peter Duttweiler of Montgomery, Texas, and Nehemiah Branson of Kingston, Ohio, who are working on the rocket payload; Dawson Tso of Dublin, New Hampshire, who is leading work on rocket recovery and safety; Forrest Putnam of Glenwood, Washington, who is leading work on the nose cone and simulations; and Grant Dupler of Amanda, Ohio, who will be leading construction of the body and fin. The team also includes two juniors, with Grace Fearday of Kettering, Ohio, working on rocket avionics and Stuart Nowery of Lebanon, Ohio, testing and modeling the rocket. Sophomore Josh Lukawski of Wantage, New Jersey, will also work on rocket modeling. Finally, the team includes two freshmen, with Daniel Hogsed of Dayton, Ohio, leading work on the sub-scale rocket and Joseph Copeland of Hamilton, Ohio, working on rocket construction.

Honor students are known for their commitment in the classroom. A group from Cedarville University is showing that same level of drive in their commitment to serving their community. Tau Delta Kappa (TDK), the social organization attached to Cedarville's honor's program, is focused on providing lasting friendships, academic opportunities, and service projects. Camp Jabez is a recreation facility offering youth summer camps incorporating the Bible with outdoor activities. With the primary goal of Christian ministry, Camp Jabez staff also aim to show children the beauty of God's creation through interaction with horses, facilitated by both full-time and volunteer staff members. They also provide equine-assisted therapy to members of the community, which involves activities with horses that are proven to assist with mental health and even addiction recovery.

Throughout the 2021-22 school year, Cedarville University's School of Education will be offering free take-home enrichment bags to the students at Cedar Cliff Elementary School. The enrichment bags contain educational materials and activities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). They are designed to help students who need additional exposure to these academic disciplines. Under Brown's guidance, junior primary (P-5) education students Natalie Hepner, from Orlando, Florida, and Katelynn Garber, from Sidney, Ohio, have planned and distributed the first round of enrichment bags, with the next coming in November and the remaining three during the spring semester.

Cedarville University's student organization K9s at the Ville will host its annual fundraising event, Pupperoni Night, on Friday, Nov. 12. It is open to both students and the public and will be held in the Stevens Students Center (SSC) event rooms from 6-8 p.m. Tickets cost $5 in advance at SSC tables or $8 at the door. "Pupperoni Night is a fun-filled event with puppies, prizes and pepperoni pizza," K9s at the Ville president Mckenzie Brittenham of Millbury, OH said. "Besides dogs and dinner, there will be desserts, beverages, raffle prizes and a trivia game." All proceeds will go to K9s at the Ville's partner, 4 Paws for Ability in Xenia, Ohio, a nonprofit organization with the mission of raising and training service dogs for children with disabilities and veterans with limb or hearing injuries.

When the country went into lockdown because of COVID-19 in March 2020, Cedarville University joined the many universities pivoting unexpectedly to online learning. Students, like Grace Gregory, who rely on The Cove, Cedarville's academic enrichment center, were encouraged academically and personally by The Cove's commitment to caring for its students through online tutoring. The change was simple for The Cove's leaders: implement a feature of the new tutoring interface that they had adopted less than three months earlier.

"These bags provide students with the extra push and support in those topics that may not receive as much attention in school." Under Brown's guidance, junior primary (P-5) education students Natalie Hepner, from Orlando, Florida, and Katelynn Garber, from Sidney, Ohio, have planned and distributed the first round of enrichment bags, with the next coming in November and the remaining three during the spring semester. "The first bag had an aviation theme," Brown explained. "Students received foam airplanes, materials for paper airplanes and suggestions for family field trips." To accommodate a variety of ages, each bag also contains a two-page guide to explain what materials and activities suit younger, K-2 students, and which ones are more appropriate for third to fifth-graders. Upcoming bag themes include weather, simple machines and explosions. Once packed, Brown, Hepner and Gardner deliver each round of 100 enrichment bags to Cedar Cliff Elementary. Cedar Cliff handles distribution. "This project has huge benefits for everyone involved," Brown explained. "The elementary students are receiving that extra push they need in these fields, and the Cedarville students planning them are gaining experience in connecting with families, helping students who need enrichment and STEM - all things that teachers need to know." For Cedarville University senior Arielle Wenig, running her first marathon this fall was more than a personal accomplishment. It was the completion of a father-daughter dream and the fulfillment of a race against time. On September 18, after years of anticipation and months of training, Arielle and her dad, Bryan, completed the 26.2-mile run to celebrate Bryan's 60th birthday. The accomplishment was particularly special because Bryan was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in May.

Watching T.J Milby's fast-paced college life from the sidelines, it may have seemed like he only had one goal in mind. Yet, years of combined soccer and theological training have equipped him with a game plan that is already making a positive mark in the lives of refugee children in Dayton, Ohio. Milby will graduate from Cedarville University with his Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree in December 2021, but he is already serving others through Dayton Soccer, a ministry of Athletes in Action. Dayton Soccer has already offered two soccer clinics with refugee children in mind, with two more scheduled for October 9 and 30. They are free and open to the public. Cedarville's theatre program will present an adaptation of the beloved children's book "Anne of Green Gables" for this year's fall play. The show runs September 30 through October 2 and October 7-10 in Cedarville's DeVries Theatre. Tickets go on sale September 14 and can be purchased from cedarville.edu/ticketinfo. Show times vary based on date. The play is open to the public. "Anne of Green Gables" is a light-hearted story with powerful themes. The tale of a rural Canadian community, it traces protagonist Anne Shirley's escapades after her orphanage accidentally sends her, instead of a boy, to a Prince Edward Island farm. Optimistic, romantic, full of whimsy and sacrifice, the drama is a natural choice for Cedarville. Hannah Bradley, a sophomore theatre major from Pittsboro, Indiana, will play Anne.

Four freshmen in the class of 2025 are no strangers to university living. In fact, their parents served as residence directors (RD) nearly two decades ago, meaning that the first time these students were on campus they were in strollers and swaddles. Now, they're back, and ready to make their 1,000 days of college life their own. Alexa Harris, a communication major from State College, Pennsylvania; Kylie Atwell, a nursing major from Denver, Colorado; Jillian Basner, an undeclared major from Nelson, New Hampshire; and Jackson Isaacs, a business finance major from Colorado Springs, Colorado spent their early formative years in residence hall apartments.

While moving her daughter, Morgan, onto Cedarville University's campus in August, Melissa Rupp heard a familiar voice. One she hadn't heard in nearly 16 years. Melissa looked around and saw freshman student Rosemary Carman. Rosemary didn't recognize Melissa, but Melissa recognized Rosemary from pictures. Seconds later, Melissa was embracing Rosemary's mom, Angela. Now mothers of college students, they had met each other 18 years before as mothers of premature babies, or preemies, and they had last seen each other when their daughters were 2.

When senior Hannah Stuercke, a nursing major from Monterey, California, was assigned a project for her ceramics foundation course, her work took a surprising turn. Combining her love for nursing and anatomy with creative studio art, Stuercke fashioned ceramic organ sculptures. Her works of art are currently on display in the university's school of nursing. Though science and art may seem like an unlikely duo, that wasn't always the case. Great historic artists such as Leonardo-Da Vinci and Wolfgang-AmadeusMozart, were also scientists.

Ryan Wade, a junior molecular and cellular biology major from Ontario, New York, moved back to Cedarville in June to spend the second half of his summer working at nearby Kettering Transportation Services. Meanwhile, he completed department training at Cedarville Township Volunteer Fire Department and Cedarville University Emergency Medical Services (CU-EMS). At Kettering Transportation Services, Wade worked several 12-hour shifts each week. During an average shift, Wade and the emergency team would go on eight or nine calls. For Wade, devoting a significant part of his summer break from college was well worth the sacrifice. He found fulfillment in meeting the needs of others who found themselves in critical situations. Now back at Cedarville for the fall semester, he volunteers aboard CU-EMS's own ambulance, MEDIC-15. CU-EMS, a volunteer ambulance service run entirely by students, is designed to cover the emergency health needs of Cedarville's campus but also responds to calls from the surrounding community if needed.

Jason Paulus, a 2021 mechanical engineering graduate from Colorado Springs, Colorado, received first prize and a $2,500 award for his paper "A Multi-Input Control Model for a Hydrofoil Boat with Differential Front & Rear Strut Steering and Actuated-Wing-Induced Roll" in the 2021 Mandles Prize for Hydrofoil Excellence, sponsored by the International Hydrofoil Society (IHS). While Paulus worked alongside the solar boat team preparing for the competition, his award-winning paper was independently authored. The team's work, which focused on upgrading and preparing their existing boat for competition, varied from Paulus' paper, which focused on the feasibility of an automatic flight control system for a future design.

Cedarville student Luke Woodard is helping his sister get a hometown pharmacy off the ground in Germantown, Ohio. While serving in a pharmacy fellowship, working as a pharmacist and being a mom, Dr. Katherine Perry from Camden, Ohio, a Cedarville University pharmacy alumna, also decided to open her own independent pharmacy from scratch. With help from her family, Perry hopes to bring a personal touch to healthcare in Germantown, Ohio, near where she grew up. Her mother, Michelle Woodard, currently works at the store, as does Perry's brother, Luke Woodard, a Cedarville finance student from Camden, Ohio. Her sister, Abby Woodard, also from Camden, plans on joining her after graduation from the Cedarville University School of Pharmacy in May 2022. This isn't Perry's first experience with an independent pharmacy. As part of her fellowship at the Cedarville University School of Pharmacy, she served at Cedar Care Village Pharmacy in Cedarville, the teaching pharmacy of the university. This experience helped her understand firsthand the personal touch an independent pharmacy can provide.

A team of Cedarville University engineering students captured first place in the 2021 SAE Supermileage Competition, the second consecutive year they've claimed the top prize. The competition usually includes a written report, an oral design report and a race to measure fuel consumption. Because of COVID-19 protocols, the race was canceled and the oral report was given remotely. This was the team's second first-place finish this year. "Sting," Cedarville's other prototype car, won first place in technical innovation at the Shell Eco-Marathon Americas Off-Track Awards with a hydraulic braking system designed by senior mechanical engineering student Micah Zell.
